Francis LeCain will, 6 July 1804
Here is a transcription of the will of Francis LeCain of Annapolis dated 6 July 1804 proved 22 March 1806:
In the Name of God Amen- I Francis LeCain of Annapolis in the County of Annapolis and Province of Nova Scotia Blacksmith, considering the Uncertainty of this Life and the inevitability of Death, And Being of sound and disposing Mind Memory and understanding Blessed be God For the same do make and publish this my Last Will and Testament~ First I Commend my Body to the Earth to be decently interred by my Executors herein after Named My Soul I Recommend to my most Mercifull Creator humbly imploring pardon of my sins. Through the Merrits of Christ Jesus my Savior~ And as to my Worldly Estate wherewith it hath pleased God to Bless me. I dispose thereof as Follows~ I Will and direct that my Executors herein after Named do immediately after my Decease sell so much of personall Estate as shall be Sufficient to pay my just debts, Funeral expenses and the Legacies herein after Bequeathed and to pay the same in Twelve months.
I Give to the Heirs of my Son John LeCain the sum of Five shillings. To my Daughter Alicia Maria Ritchie the sum of Five pounds~ to John Harris and Thomas Harris Sons of my Daughter Elizabeth Harris deceased the sum of Two pounds Ten shillings each~ To my Daughter Ann the Wife of John Skelton the sum of Five pounds if living after my death~ To my Daughter Mary the Wife of Abraham Spur the sum of Five pounds and to the Heirs of my SonThomas LeCain the sum of Five Pounds Which said several Legacies I will and order to be paid by my Executors within Twelve Months after my decease~ I give to my son Nicholas LeCain all my Wearing Apparell Silver Watch and Silver Shoe and Knee Buckles- I Give devise and Bequeath to my son William LeCain his Heirs and Assigns the Land whereon my Blacksmith shop Stands with the shop thereon and the Land Adjoining and Appertaining to the same on the North Side the Street, and from the said street to the Annapolis River` Also all my Blacksmith Tools and instruments to Have and to Hold the same to the said William LeCain his heirs and Assigns Forever~ Likewise I Give and Bequeath after the decease of my said Wife All the Rest Residue and Remainder of my personal Estate to him the said William LeCain his Heirs and Assigns Forever~ I Give and Bequeath to my Beloved Wife Elizabeth LeCain the use Rents Issues and Profits all and singular the Rest Residue and Remainder of my Real and personal Estate during her Natural life and at and upon the decease of my said Wife- I Give and devise to my said son William LeCain His Heirs and Assigns my Field on the Cape, Bounded in front by the high way, Easterly by land of Robert Dickson, Northerly by lands of Stephen Snedonand Westerly by lands of my son Thomas LeCain to Hold the same to him the said William LeCain his Heirs and Assigns Forever~ I Give and devise likewise to my said son William LeCain my Lands at Dougau- Bounded by lands of John Polhemus Northerly and Southerly by land of the late Phillip Barteaux- to hold the same to him the said William LeCain his heirs and Assigns forever~ I Give and devise to my son Francis LeCain his Heirs and Assigns the House and Barn and the Farming Utensils which are now on the Farm he lives on to hold the same to him the said Francis LeCain his Heirs and Assigns forever. All the Rest Residue and Remainder of my Real Estate, after the decease of my said Wife I give and devise to my Two SonsFrancis LeCain and Nicholas LeCain their Heirs and Assigns to hold the same to the saidFrancis Lecain and Nicholas Lecain their Heirs and Assigns Forever as Tenants in Common not as Joint Tenants- I Give and Bequeath to my Son Benjamin LeCain Ten pounds Nova Scotia Currency to Be paid by my Executors at the expiration of one year after my decease~ And Lastly, I do hereby Constitute and appoint my sons Francis LeCain and William LeCain and my Respectfull Friend William Robertson Executors of this my Last Will and Testament~ hereby Revoking all Former Wills by me made and declaring this only to be my Last Will and Testament~ In Witness whereof I have hereunder set my hand and Seal this sixth day of July in the year of our Lord one Thousand Eight Hundred and Four~
