Salt Box Talks Revisited

Instead of watching summer re-runs on television, why not revisit some of our most popular Salt Box lectures on selected Tuesday evenings at North Hills Museum?
This program is designed for those who would like to discover and appreciate North Hills Museum and the surrounding community. Each session will include a power point presentation on a selected theme, a guided tour of the collection where applicable and refreshments.
Each lecture is $6.00 per person.

The Big Three – Georgian Furniture
Furniture design within the Georgian Period (1714-1830) was dominated by the talent of three men: Thomas Chippendale, George Hepplewhite and Thomas Sheraton. The North Hills collection houses fine examples of the styles created by these gifted cabinetmakers. Join us as we examine the characteristics of these exquisite pieces of furniture.

Chinoiserie at North Hills
One of the most important stylistic forms during the Georgian Period, ‘Chinese Taste’ in design was seen as exotic, fanciful, and a reaction against the ‘severity’ of Classicism. Join us as we trace its history and influence on the decorative arts; especially within the porcelain, furniture, and artifacts found at North Hills.

The Grand Tour at North Hills
Between c. 1660 and 1840 many people of the affluent class would travel to the cultural centers of Europe where they were exposed to the arts and culture of classical antiquity and the Renaissance, usually referred to as “The Grand Tour”. Tourists of this period collected many tasteful memorable objects during their travels. Discover the history of this form of travel and view some wonderful examples of the souvenirs of “The Grand Tour” found within North Hills Museum.

Restoration and Conservation
Learn about the evolution of restoration and conservation in paintings and antiques. Discover some of the techniques that museums use to maintain their collections and how they may be applicable to the preservation of your own treasures. Discussion will also include fascinating stories of conservation from the lecturer’s own experience.
