Knot: A Workshop

July 18, 2015 @ 10:00 am - 3:00 pm

The Annapolis Heritage Society is inviting you to “get your sheepshank on” with a knot-tying workshop on Saturday, July 18 at the Sinclair Inn Museum, Annapolis Royal.

Evan Cervelli, an instructor with the Nova Scotia Sea School, gave a very successful workshop at the recent Prosperity Conference in Cornwallis. Evan began learning to tie knots when he was young through Boy Scouts and rock-climbing. When he was 15, he began sailing with the Nova Scotia Sea School on a wooden sailboat with a traditional sprit rig. Sailing has provided Evan lots of opportunities to be away from the internet when knot tying is one of the only forms of entertainment. Through work at the Sea School, Evan has been exposed to traditional sailing methods that do not rely on modern technology such as winches, cam-cleats or electronics.  Evan is well practised at knot tying, splicing, whipping, serving, grommet-making and rope handling. In 2008, Evan took a Chinese decorative knot class when he was visiting Taiwan and enjoys decorative knot tying in his spare time.

Participants will learn several basic working knot techniques (including sheepshank, bowline and , as well as some decorative knots, in an informal session that’s suitable for anyone 12 or older. The workshop will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a short break for lunch.

To pre-register, call 902 532-0996 or 532-7754, or see Ken Maher at the Sinclair inn, 230 St. George Street. The fee is $20.
