2014 Fall Salt Box Talks

This program is designed for those who would like to discover and appreciate North Hills Museum and the surrounding community. In keeping with the 250th anniversary of the building, as well as the 50th anniversary of Robert Patterson purchasing North Hills, we offer a selection of topics which are inspired or directly related to these celebrations. Each session will include a PowerPoint presentation on a selected theme, a guided tour of the collection where applicable, refreshments and baked treats. Each lecture is $8.00 per person. Tapestries – Painting in Thread
Tuesday, September 9, 2014 10 am – 12 pm or 1:30 – 3:30 pm

Visiting lecturer Paul Paquette will present a captivating survey of the history of European tapestry; from the 8th century B.C. through the medieval age and the Renaissance. Its demise as an art form due to stylistic changes between the 17th – 19th centuries will be investigated. Finally, its rebirth by 20th century hobbyist will be examined.

Great Collectors & Patrons of the Arts
Tuesday, September 23, 2014 10 am – 12 pm or 1:30 – 3:30 pm

Join us as we examine the history of collecting and its relevance to museums and galleries. We will focus on great Canadian patrons and their contribution to national and provincial culture and heritage. Central to this discussion will be the story behind Robert Patterson’s collection at North Hills, and his gift to the province of Nova Scotia.

The The British are Coming!
Tuesday, October 7, 2014 10 am – 12 pm or 1:30 – 3:30 pm

In 1763 British Captain Benjamin Rumsey was granted 1000 acres of land, on which, North Hills was built in c. 1764, making it the oldest house in Granville Ferry. Dr. Barry Moody, Professor Emeritus Acadia University shares his expertise on the 18th century arrival of the Planter and Loyalists in Granville Township.
