Salt Box Talk: Lecture Series

This program is designed for those who would like to discover and appreciate North Hills Museum and the surrounding community. Each session will include a power point presentation on a selected theme, a guided tour of the collection where applicable and refreshments. Each lecture is $3.00 per person. Framed – The Art Around the Painting: Tuesday, September 11, 2012 • 10:00 am – 12:00 pm, or 1:30 – 3:30 pm
Learn about the history and function of frames in the golden age of frame making between the 14th and 19thcenturies in Europe. Discover the stylistic differences in the ornamentation of frames; often as fascinating as that of the paintings themselves. Mr. Patterson’s collection of art is surrounded by some wonderful examples.
Instruments of Illumination –The History of Stained Glass: Tuesday, September 25, 2012 • 10:00 am – 12:00 pm, or 1:30 – 3:30 pm
A survey of the history of stained glass from the Mesopotamians (c. 3000 BC) to the hobbyists of today. Accompanied with examples from both the religious and the secular, from around the world to those found within our own community .We will also examine the process of manufacturing glass and the various methods used to create this timeless art form.
Chinoiserie at North Hills: Tuesday, October 9, 2012 • 10:00 am – 12:00 pm, or 1:30 – 3:30 pm
One of the most important stylistic forms during the Georgian Period (1714–1830) ‘Chinese Taste’ in design was seen as exotic , fanciful, and a reaction against the ‘severity’ of Classicism. Join us as we trace its history and influence on the decorative arts; especially within the porcelain, furniture, and artifacts found at North Hills.
