The Hogan Family of Granville Township

The Hogan family of Annapolis County, Nova Scotia is descended from Patrick Hogan who married in Granville Township 11 Feb. 1821 Martha Clark. The marriage is recorded in the register of All Saints Anglican Church in Granville Centre. The ceremony was performed by Rev. George Best and witnesses were Elliot Sproul and Elizabeth Best. Neither bride nor groom was officially Anglican. Patrick listed his religion as Presbyterian late in life, and the Clarks were Quakers of long standing, originally from Connecticut. According to the Old Granville Township Book, which records the date of their marriage as well as the birthdates for their first six children, Patrick was the son of Patrick Hogan and Martha the daughter of Thomas Clark. Patrick Hogan’s death record in 1873 states he was born in Ireland, and it is likely he came to North America alone as a young man. Martha Clark was apparently born in Granville Township, and her death record of 1872 states that she was the daughter of Thomas and Olive Clark. The Granville Township Book records four children of Thomas Clark: Thomas, b. 26 Feb. 1789; Stephen, b. 22 Feb. 1791; Lucinda, b. 17 June 1793; and Martha, b. 15 July 1795. Thomas Clark jr. m. 21 March 1816 Esther Peck Parsons, and Lucinda Clark m. 12 Jan. 1831 Jacob Crip.

At the time of the 1838 Nova Scotia Census, Patrick Hogan was listed as a farmer living in Granville Township with a household of nine, including, in addition to himself, two females under 6 years, two males and a female between 6 and 14 years and one male and two females over 14 years. Patrick and Martha lived long enough to be enumerated in the first federal Canadian Census of 1871. They were living in Young’s Cove, Patrick listed as a farmer and a Presbyterian, born in Ireland, age 74. Martha was listed as age 74 and a Quaker. The household also included grandchildren William J. Hogan, age 16 a seaman, and Martha E. Hogan, age 14, both Baptists, and daughter Martha Foster, listed as a married seamstress and an Anglican boarding with her parents, with children Zaidee E. Foster, age 8, Florence A. Foster, age 5 and Charles P. Foster, age 3. The families of son William R. Hogan and widowed daughter-in-law Letitia Hogan lived nearby.

In his will dated 19 Aug. 1872 and proved 5 Apr. 1873, Patrick Hogan of Young’s Cove left to daughter Martha Ann Foster the sum of twenty dollars. To his son William, he left the residue of his real and personal estate consisting of “the Farm, Buildings, Sawmill, Cattle, Sheep, horse, all the farming Utensils with all the other privileges connected with the same which I enjoyed myself, together with Seven acres of marsh situated in Lower Belleisle”. He also stipulated that the house, land and premises formerly occupied by his son James Hogan (deceased) and since occupied by William Hogan, be sold and the amount realized to be divided into five equal shares, to be given to Letitia, widow of James Hogan, and to his four unnamed children.
