SUMMARY:Hog Island Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Opening Saturday\, 9 July\, there will be a small exhibit at the O’Dell House Museum featuring the history of Hog Island\, Annapolis Royal\, in conjunction with the House and Gardens Tour sponsored by the Historic Gardens. This region\, encompassing the new Fortier Mills Subdivision\, the area of the Fire Hall and the Tidal Power Station\, has a long and interesting history\, stretching back to the early 18th century. The site of early executions in the town\, it also witnessed the 19thand 20th centuries attempts at industrialization\, including the construction of sailing ships and the manufacture of such things as cast iron stoves\, skis and wooden toys. \nIn the 20th century\, it has been the location of links to Granville Ferry\, first by bridge and then by causeway\, which in the 1980s became the site of North America’s first tidal power plant. The exhibit will run until Labour Day.

Flora and fauna in art provided a language that allowed the mass public to be able to decipher the hidden meanings and moral messages found in painting\, especially in works that exhibited the passage of time and the seasons. We will examine the 17th century emergence of the ‘Still Life’ painting as a separate branch of Dutch art. The impact of naturalism will also be addressed in 19th Century European art.

SUMMARY:Knot: A Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Annapolis Heritage Society is inviting you to “get your sheepshank on” with a knot-tying workshop on Saturday\, July 18 at the Sinclair Inn Museum\, Annapolis Royal. \nEvan Cervelli\, an instructor with the Nova Scotia Sea School\, gave a very successful workshop at the recent Prosperity Conference in Cornwallis. Evan began learning to tie knots when he was young through Boy Scouts and rock-climbing. When he was 15\, he began sailing with the Nova Scotia Sea School on a wooden sailboat with a traditional sprit rig. Sailing has provided Evan lots of opportunities to be away from the internet when knot tying is one of the only forms of entertainment. Through work at the Sea School\, Evan has been exposed to traditional sailing methods that do not rely on modern technology such as winches\, cam-cleats or electronics.  Evan is well practised at knot tying\, splicing\, whipping\, serving\, grommet-making and rope handling. In 2008\, Evan took a Chinese decorative knot class when he was visiting Taiwan and enjoys decorative knot tying in his spare time. \nParticipants will learn several basic working knot techniques (including sheepshank\, bowline and \, as well as some decorative knots\, in an informal session that’s suitable for anyone 12 or older. The workshop will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.\, with a short break for lunch. \nTo pre-register\, call 902 532-0996 or 532-7754\, or see Ken Maher at the Sinclair inn\, 230 St. George Street. The fee is $20. \nContact: Ken Maher 902 532-0996 or 532-5552

SUMMARY:Victorian Christmas at the O'Dell House Museum
DESCRIPTION:Things are quickly coming together for the most wonderful time of the year at the O’Dell House Museum. Volunteers have been in the woods gathering fir boughs\, Canadian holly and beech leaves. The gardens and orchards of Annapolis County have produced holly\, boxwood\, a variety of dried flowers and fruit. On a Monday morning in late November all of these elements are gathered together and the museum is transformed into a celebration of the beauty and simplicity of Christmas in the 1870s. “Victorian Christmas truly shows Annapolis Royal at its best\,” said Ryan Scranton\, Curator of the Annapolis Heritage Society. “In this one event we have a mixture of history\, the natural environment\, the artistry of our decorators and a whole heap of volunteerism. This event really does highlight the strengths of our community.” \nWhen you enter the museum you can tell that something interesting is happening. Rather than the glare of electric light\, the museum is lit with traditional oil lamps and candles. A friendly costumed interpreter greets you\, offers some cookies and a cup of hot-mulled apple cider. From around the corner you can hear the sound of people singing carols. As you walk toward the music\, you begin to notice the delicately made strings of fir garland and the swags above the doors. Exploring a bit deeper into the building you have the chance to meet costumed interpreters who are busy working in the kitchen or reading stories in the parlour. It is not hard to understand how this event has been a tradition in Annapolis Royal for almost 40 years. \nThis event will take place at the O’Dell House Museum on November 29 & 30 and on December 6 & 7 from 7 pm to 9 pm and on December 8 from 2 pm to 4 pm.
