Boutilier\, who will present The Citadel on Stage. \nThe Citadel on Stage is a lively and entertaining social history. While it is a biography of the people of Halifax during the colonial era\, it is also the story of the British army and Royal navy in a garrison town\, and a study of the relationship of politics\, religion\, economics\, and culture\, as well as social activities in pre-Confederation Halifax. \nIn his own style\, A. D. Boutilier paints a vivid picture of the comedy and farce inherent in upper class society and in the British institutions moored at Halifax until 1867. \nBorn in Sydney Mines\, A. D. Boutilier is a graduate of Saint Mary’s University\, with a B.A. in English and Psychology\, as well as an M.A. in Atlantic Canada Studies. \nHe has written several short stories and poems\, a yet to be published social history of colonial Halifax\, and a third book on post-colonial Halifax. DESCRIPTION:This program is designed for those who would like to discover artifacts and art history\, appreciate North Hills Museum and the surrounding community. Each session will include a PowerPoint presentation on a selected theme\, a guided tour of the collection where applicable and delicious baked treats and refreshments. \nEach lecture is $10.00 per person. A great way to spend fall Tuesdays! \nRegistration required\, call 902-532-2168\, or email northhillsmuseum@gmail.com \nTuesday\, September 27\, 2016\, 10 am – 12 pm or 1:30 – 3:30 pm\nPainting in Canada Part 1\nWe will trace the origins of painting in the New World from the early French patronage of the church in the 17thcentury to the English tradition of painting images of important officials\, merchants and their properties. We will explore the Canadian landscape through the eyes of 18th century topographical painters\, and the wonderful paintings of everyday life by Krieghoff and Kane. The works of the academically trained artists will also be explored\, that would lead to the foundation of different art societies and associations\, culminating with the foundation of the Royal Canadian Academy in 1880. \nTuesday\, October 4\, 2016\, 10 am – 12 pm or 1:30 – 3:30 pm\nPainting in Canada Part 2\nOur travels continue through post confederation Canada with the impressionistic style paintings by members of the Canadian Art Club\, to the struggle to define nationalism as seen in the works of Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven\, and their contemporaries Emily Carr and David Milne. We will also study the works of great modern painters such as Alfred Pellan\, Paul Emile Borduas and Jean Paul Riopelle. The 1950s and 60s produced great abstract artists such as Jock MacDonald and Jack Bush\, and in the Maritimes; Bruno Bobak\, Molly Bobak\, Christopher Pratt\, Mary Pratt\, Alex Colville. These and many other 20th century Canadian painters will be discussed. \nTuesday\, October 11\, 10 am – 12 pm or 1:30 – 3:30 pm\nThe Dishes in the House\nNorth Hills Museum is a treasure chest of some of the finest Georgian porcelain. We will trace the evolution of English porcelain production beginning in the early 18th century. Discover the many manufacturers found within the collection; such as\, New Hall\, Worcester\, Minton\, Spode\, Bow\, Wedgewood\, and many more. We will discuss different manufacturers’ histories and study their patterns\, patronage\, and how to identify their hallmarks.

SUMMARY:Hog Island Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Opening Saturday\, 9 July\, there will be a small exhibit at the O’Dell House Museum featuring the history of Hog Island\, Annapolis Royal\, in conjunction with the House and Gardens Tour sponsored by the Historic Gardens. This region\, encompassing the new Fortier Mills Subdivision\, the area of the Fire Hall and the Tidal Power Station\, has a long and interesting history\, stretching back to the early 18th century. The site of early executions in the town\, it also witnessed the 19thand 20th centuries attempts at industrialization\, including the construction of sailing ships and the manufacture of such things as cast iron stoves\, skis and wooden toys. \nIn the 20th century\, it has been the location of links to Granville Ferry\, first by bridge and then by causeway\, which in the 1980s became the site of North America’s first tidal power plant. The exhibit will run until Labour Day.

Finally\, its rebirth by 20th century hobbyist will be examined. \nTuesday\, August 9\, 2016\, 7 – 9 pm\nGreat Collectors & Patrons of the Arts\nJoin us as we examine the history of collecting and its relevance to museums and galleries. We will focus on great Canadian patrons and their contribution to national and provincial culture and heritage. Central to this discussion will be the story behind Robert Patterson’s collection at North Hills\, and his gift to the province of Nova Scotia. \nTuesday\, August 16\, 2016\, 7 – 9 pm\nHistory of European Landscape Painting – Part 1\nWe will trace the origins of the European landscape in the pastoral images found in Hellenistic and ancient Roman art. Examine the use of the landscape motif and its decorative beauty found in medieval religious paintings and illuminated manuscript. Discover the sharply observed details and luminous space in 15th century renaissance paintings from Northern Europe and Italy. Learn about the 16th century taste for panoramic views and the bourgeoning art of topography\, and the ideal landscapes of the 17th century embellished with the ruins from the classical world. \nTuesday\, August 23\, 2016\, 7 – 9 pm\nHistory of European Landscape Painting – Part 2\nOur travels through European art continue in 18th century France and England featuring rich pastoral landscapes. Topographical ‘Views’ reach the height of popularity with the Grand Tour in Rome and Venice. The later 18th and early 19th centuries present new themes in landscape painting such as the ‘Sublime’ (the power of nature) and ‘the Beautiful’ (pleasing meditations on nature). We will also examine the more spontaneous observations of nature found in the works of the 19th century French Realists\, Impressionists; such as Monet and Pissarro\, and the Post Impressionists; such as Van Gogh and Cezanne.

Discover the sharply observed details and luminous space in 15th century renaissance paintings from Northern Europe and Italy. Learn about the 16th Century taste for panoramic views and the bourgeoning art of topography\, and the ideal landscapes of the 17th Century embellished with the ruins from the classical world. \nTuesday\, September 29\, 2015 • 10:00am – 12:00pm\, or 1:30 – 3:30pm\nHistory of European Landscape Painting Part 2\nOur travels through European art continue in 18th Century France and England featuring rich pastoral landscapes. Topographical ‘Views’ reach the height of popularity with the Grand Tour in Rome and Venice. The later 18th and early 19th centuries present new themes in landscape painting such as the ‘Sublime’ (the power of nature) and ‘the Beautiful’ (pleasing meditations on nature). We will also examine the more spontaneous observations of nature found in the works of the 19th century French Realists\, Impressionists; such as Monet and Pissarro\, and the Post Impressionists; such as Van Gogh and Cezanne. \nTuesday\, October 13\, 2015 10:00am – 12:00pm\, or 1:30 – 3:30pm\nFlora & Fauna – The Hidden Meaning\nDiscover the symbolism behind the use of many flowers and plants in religious paintings from the 15th to the 17th centuries in Europe. Flora and fauna in art provided a language that allowed the mass public to be able to decipher the hidden meanings and moral messages found in painting\, especially in works that exhibited the passage of time and the seasons. We will examine the 17th century emergence of the ‘Still Life’ painting as a separate branch of Dutch art. The impact of naturalism will also be addressed in 19th Century European art.

SUMMARY:Knot: A Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Annapolis Heritage Society is inviting you to “get your sheepshank on” with a knot-tying workshop on Saturday\, July 18 at the Sinclair Inn Museum\, Annapolis Royal. \nEvan Cervelli\, an instructor with the Nova Scotia Sea School\, gave a very successful workshop at the recent Prosperity Conference in Cornwallis. Evan began learning to tie knots when he was young through Boy Scouts and rock-climbing. When he was 15\, he began sailing with the Nova Scotia Sea School on a wooden sailboat with a traditional sprit rig. Sailing has provided Evan lots of opportunities to be away from the internet when knot tying is one of the only forms of entertainment. Through work at the Sea School\, Evan has been exposed to traditional sailing methods that do not rely on modern technology such as winches\, cam-cleats or electronics.  Evan is well practised at knot tying\, splicing\, whipping\, serving\, grommet-making and rope handling. In 2008\, Evan took a Chinese decorative knot class when he was visiting Taiwan and enjoys decorative knot tying in his spare time. \nParticipants will learn several basic working knot techniques (including sheepshank\, bowline and \, as well as some decorative knots\, in an informal session that’s suitable for anyone 12 or older. The Society invites you to a special fund raising dinner on the evenings of November 28 and 29\, and December 5 and 6\, 2014 and we are limited to 10 people per evening of a feast typical of that held by Queen Victoria at Windsor Castle during the Christmas season\, 1899. \n(Sorry December 6 is sold out already.) \nNow\, some 115 years later\, this four course dinner will be held at the Bailey House\, a home also touched by the royal family when Queen Victoria’s father\, the Duke of Kent\, danced at a ball in this historic home. \nTHE EVENT: Your presence is welcome after 6:30 pm for feasting to commence at 7:30 pm at the Bailey House [150 St George Street\, Annapolis Royal]. \nTHE ATTIRE: Appropriate costuming of the era and for the occasion is de rigueur [but not required]. \nTHE EVENING: The four course repast will be interspersed with Parlour games appropriate of the era and a stroll to the O’Dell House Museum for the Victorian Christmas festivities. \nYOUR CONTRIBUTION: To this special fund raising event is $150 [all inclusive] per person [with a $100 tax deductible receipt offered]. \nThis is a special event that will cater to only 40 people over the two weekends.
