SUMMARY:Salt Box Talks: Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:This program is designed for those who would like to discover and appreciate North Hills Museum and the surrounding community. Each session will include a power point presentation on a selected theme\, a guided tour of the collection where applicable and refreshments. Each lecture is $3.00 per person. A great way to spend fall Tuesdays! Registration required\, call 532-2168. \nChinoiserie at North Hills:\nTuesday September 10\, 2013 10:00 am – 12:00 pm\, or 1:30 – 3:30 pm \nOne of the most important stylistic forms during the Georgian Period (1714–1830)\, ‘Chinese Taste’ in design was seen as exotic \, fanciful\, and a reaction against the ‘severity’ of Classicism. Join us as we trace its history and influence on the decorative arts; especially within the porcelain\, furniture\, and artifacts found at North Hills. \nKeeping up with the Stuarts:\nTuesday September 24\, 2013 10:00 am – 12:00 pm\, or 1:30 – 3:30 pm \nJoin us as we travel through the English furniture styles that were popular during the Stuart period from the beginning of the reign of James I in 1603 to the end of Queen Anne’s reign in 1714. We will examine the sturdy oak construction of the Jacobean style that was prevalent from James I to Charles I; the austere designs of the Puritans; the influence of the French and Dutch in the Carolean style while Charles II was in exile; the graceful and decorative styles of furniture in the William and Mary period and finally the mastery of technique during the reign of Queen Anne. Mr. Patterson’s collection boasts many fine examples of furniture that covers the Stuart period. \nRestoration and Conservation:\nTuesday October 8\, 2012 10:00 am – 12:00 pm\, or 1:30 – 3:30 pm \nLearn about the evolution of restoration and conservation in paintings and antiques. Discover some of the techniques that museums use to maintain their collections and how they may be applicable to the preservation of your own treasures. Discussion will also include fascinating stories of conservation from the lecturer’s own experience. \nGroups: If your group is interested in having its own “Salt Box Talk” at North Hills Museum\, please consult our list of themes below. \n\nGeorgian Furniture\nThe Royal Academy of Art\nThe Grand Tour\nThe History of Stained Glass\nThe History of Frames

SUMMARY:Yarmouth Shantymen Concert
DESCRIPTION:The acclaimed Yarmouth Shantymen are coming to Annapolis Royal on July 28th. The group were founded\, somewhat by accident\, in 1984. Group member Eric Ruff\, the retired Curator of the Yarmouth County Museum\, asked a number of friends to accompany him to illustrate a talk on traditional Sea Shanties. The group discovered an immediate connection with these working songs. \nAlmost 30 years later\, the group has produced three albums and is still going strong. Sea shanties are the rhythmic songs sung by sailors during the age of sail. Each of the songs has its own rhythm and would be particular to a certain job aboard a ship. The musical rhythm helped co-ordinate the effort of the sailors while hoisting cargo\, making sail or any of the countless other jobs performed on a sailing vessel. Many of these songs are centuries old and they certainly would have been familiar to sailors for the Annapolis Royal area. \n“I am very excited that the Yarmouth Shantymen are coming to Annapolis Royal” said Annapolis Heritage Society Curator\, Ryan Scranton. I have known Eric Ruff through museum circles for years and have had the occasion to hear the Shantymen on a number of occasions. There is something special in hearing the songs and rhythms that our ancestors would have known so well. It is quite interesting to imagine a schooner making its way up the Annapolis Basin with the only sound being the sailors singing”. \nThe concert will be held at St George and St Andrew United Church (401 St. George Street) at 7:30 pm on July 28. Tickets are available for $10 at the O’Dell House Museum\, Sinclair Inn Museum and at the door. This event is a fundraiser for the Annapolis Heritage Society. To reserve tickets please call 902 532-7754.
