SUMMARY:Charitable Giving Techniques – What Donors Need to Know
DESCRIPTION:Several charitable organizations in the Annapolis Royal area are joining forces to host an informative panel presentation on Tuesday\, November 26\, on techniques that allow donors to any registered charity to maximize the effectiveness and tax efficiency of their gifts. The panel will include experts in law\, tax and special tax-effective donation methods. \nThe event is open to anyone who wishes to learn more about this topic\, whether you are a potential donor of some of the wonderful registered charities in our region\, or someone who works or volunteers with a charitable organization. The event is not intended to solicit funds on behalf of any charity\, but to provide an opportunity to become better informed about charitable giving. \nThe hosting organizations are the Annapolis Heritage Society\, Annapolis Royal Historic Gardens Society\, King’s Theatre Society and King’s Theatre Foundation\, all of whom are very pleased and proud to be able to collaborate on an event of this type. It is recognized that all the local charities share a common pool of supporters\, and thus the concept of a joint presentation was embraced by the partnering organizations as the best possible way to offer information to our community. \nThe panel presentation will be held at King’s Theatre\, Annapolis Royal\, starting at 7 pm on Tuesday\, November 26\, 2013 and will last approximately one hour. There will be opportunity for questions following the presentation\, as well as a social time with refreshments. \nFor further information\, please call 532-7018.

SUMMARY:Victorian Christmas at the O'Dell House Museum
DESCRIPTION:Things are quickly coming together for the most wonderful time of the year at the O’Dell House Museum. Volunteers have been in the woods gathering fir boughs\, Canadian holly and beech leaves. The gardens and orchards of Annapolis County have produced holly\, boxwood\, a variety of dried flowers and fruit. On a Monday morning in late November all of these elements are gathered together and the museum is transformed into a celebration of the beauty and simplicity of Christmas in the 1870s. “Victorian Christmas truly shows Annapolis Royal at its best\,” said Ryan Scranton\, Curator of the Annapolis Heritage Society. “In this one event we have a mixture of history\, the natural environment\, the artistry of our decorators and a whole heap of volunteerism. This event really does highlight the strengths of our community.” \nWhen you enter the museum you can tell that something interesting is happening. Rather than the glare of electric light\, the museum is lit with traditional oil lamps and candles. A friendly costumed interpreter greets you\, offers some cookies and a cup of hot-mulled apple cider. From around the corner you can hear the sound of people singing carols. As you walk toward the music\, you begin to notice the delicately made strings of fir garland and the swags above the doors. Exploring a bit deeper into the building you have the chance to meet costumed interpreters who are busy working in the kitchen or reading stories in the parlour. It is not hard to understand how this event has been a tradition in Annapolis Royal for almost 40 years. \nThis event will take place at the O’Dell House Museum on November 29 & 30 and on December 6 & 7 from 7 pm to 9 pm and on December 8 from 2 pm to 4 pm.

SUMMARY:Yarmouth Shantymen Concert
DESCRIPTION:The acclaimed Yarmouth Shantymen are coming to Annapolis Royal on July 28th. The group were founded\, somewhat by accident\, in 1984. Group member Eric Ruff\, the retired Curator of the Yarmouth County Museum\, asked a number of friends to accompany him to illustrate a talk on traditional Sea Shanties. The group discovered an immediate connection with these working songs. \nAlmost 30 years later\, the group has produced three albums and is still going strong. Sea shanties are the rhythmic songs sung by sailors during the age of sail. Each of the songs has its own rhythm and would be particular to a certain job aboard a ship. The musical rhythm helped co-ordinate the effort of the sailors while hoisting cargo\, making sail or any of the countless other jobs performed on a sailing vessel. Many of these songs are centuries old and they certainly would have been familiar to sailors for the Annapolis Royal area. \n“I am very excited that the Yarmouth Shantymen are coming to Annapolis Royal” said Annapolis Heritage Society Curator\, Ryan Scranton. I have known Eric Ruff through museum circles for years and have had the occasion to hear the Shantymen on a number of occasions. There is something special in hearing the songs and rhythms that our ancestors would have known so well. It is quite interesting to imagine a schooner making its way up the Annapolis Basin with the only sound being the sailors singing”. \nThe concert will be held at St George and St Andrew United Church (401 St. George Street) at 7:30 pm on July 28. Tickets are available for $10 at the O’Dell House Museum\, Sinclair Inn Museum and at the door. This event is a fundraiser for the Annapolis Heritage Society. To reserve tickets please call 902 532-7754.
